Ann McPherson CBE FRCGP FRCP - Medical Director of DIPEx
Ann is the co-founder and medical director of DIPEx. She works as a GP in Oxford and is also a part-time lecturer in the Department of Primary Health Care at Oxford University. She also writes on and researches into the health of women and adolescents. She created the award-winning book on women’s health for GPs Women’s problems in general practice first published in 1984 and now in its 4th edition and wrote the Woman’s Hour Book of Health. She is co-author of Diary of a teenage health freak which has sold more than half a million copies, has been translated into 22 languages and made into two successful TV series for Channel 4. She developed, with the FPA, Contrapack a resource for GPs and patients to improve contraceptive choices and shared decision-making. She was for many years the BBC Thames Valley Radio Doctor, doing a monthly phone-in on all matters of health. She has appointments on several committees including The Medical Advisory Committee of the FPA; the DOH Independent Advisory Group on Teenage Pregnancy; National Cervical Screening Committee of the Department of Health and Oxford University Student Health Committee and is a medical advisor and Trustee of Breast Cancer Care.

Andrew Herxheimer FRCP

Andrew Herxheimer FRCP
Andrew is the DIPEx co-founder. He spent most of his career teaching clinical pharmacology in London, most recently at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School. For 30 years he also edited Drug & Therapeutics Bulletin, published by the Consumers’ Association. Since 1992 he has worked in the Cochrane Collaboration and is now Emeritus Fellow of the UK Cochrane Centre in Oxford.

Rachel Miller

Rachel Miller
Rachel Miller was for 26 years a GP principal and trainer in a group practice in London. After taking early retirement she obtained an MSc in Health Planning and Financing at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Since 1992 she has been involved in qualitative research for the King's Fund in London and the Judge Institute for Management Studies in Cambridge.

Sue Ziebland -  Research Director of DIPEx

Sue Ziebland - Research Director of DIPEx
Sue is a medical sociologist. Sue is employed as a Cancer Research UK senior research fellow in the General Practice Research Group, Department of Primary Health Care, University of Oxford. She has worked in the academic, voluntary and NHS sectors since completing her MSc in Social Research Methods in 1986. Sue contributes to the strategic planning for the group and is responsible for the data collection and analysis methods used in the project. Her research interests include smoking cessation, cancer prevention, emergency contraception, narrative analysis and qualitative methodology.

Alison Chapple

Alison Chapple
Alison is a medical sociologist, and is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Primary Health Care, University of Oxford. Within DIPEx her main task has been to manage the prostate cancer, testicular cancer, lung cancer, living with dying and PSA testing sections of the project. Alison has an MA in Health Research, University of Lancaster, and a PhD from the Department of General Practice, University of Manchester. Previously she has managed a number of research projects at the Universities of Liverpool, Lancaster and Manchester. She is also a Registered Nurse.

Gill Needham

Gill Needham
Gill’s current post is Head of Strategic and Service Development in the Open University Library. Since joining the Open University in 1998 she has taken a leading role in developing the Library’s electronic services to its 200,000 students, has launched and developed an Information Literacy Strategy for the University and has been a major author on three Open University courses. Previously she worked for 15 years in the National Health Service, initially as a librarian and then subsequently as an R&D Specialist in Public Health, responsible for promoting Evidence Based Practice and public involvement in healthcare decision making.

Dr Aidan Macfarlane FRCP, FRCPCH, FFPH

Dr Aidan Macfarlane FRCP, FRCPCH, FFPH
Aidan is an independent international consultant in the strategic planning of maternity, child and adolescent health services. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health. He is the author of 10 ‘professional books’ on child and adolescent health, along with 8 books written specifically for teenagers including the award winning ‘Teenage Health Freak’ series published by Oxford University Press. With Dr Ann McPherson, he presently runs two websites for teenagers www.teenagehealthfreak.org and www.youthhealthtalk.org . He has done consultancies for various Health Authorities throughout England and abroad including working for the World Health Organisation, the European Community, UNICEF, UNPA, and the Overseas Development Agency. He has done consultancy work in Romania, Mauritius, Western Australia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, Portugal, South Africa, Uzbekistan and Georgia. He is one of ten international consultants developing a training package for doctors working in Adolescent Health throughout Europe. The training programme is available on www.euteach.com. He is also working at national level on developing undergraduate and postgraduate training in young people’s health and illness for the Department of Health in England.
